Many
estimators face the challenge of bidding projects
from plans that are less than complete. Lagoons,
farm ponds, and preliminary site development
take-off require estimators to take primitive data
and turn it into a good estimate. InSite provides
the tools necessary to achieve a quality take-off
from less than complete plans.

The example
provided here is a sub-division road that includes
the existing grades, a centerline profile and a road
template. Most estimators would be forced to draw
cross sections at station intervals, and then do an
average end take-off to obtain quantities. Either
watch the narrated video or follow along with the
example below to see how easy this take-off is with
InSite SiteWork.

Begin the take-off by
entering the plan scales, and tracing the existing
grades. Next, transfer any known elevations from the
profile to the plan view. On this simple example,
there is a tie in elevation to the existing road
(right) and another elevation at the match line
(left). Use InSite's Auto-fill sloping line tool to
trace the centerline, entering the known elevations,
and letting InSite compute the elevations between.

Once the centerline
is traced, use the offset tool to enter the lanes.
Click the offset icon, and select the centerline.
The offset toolbox is where the offset details are
entered. The road box details indicate a lane width
of 11 feet, with a slope of 1/4 inch per foot (.23).
By entering this data, and clicking the dual offset
choice, InSite creates two offset sloping lines.
Combined with the centerline, the road surface is
now defined.

Use this same
techniques if any other features (curb and
gutter, drainage ditches, etc.) are on the road box
detail.
The road box details
provide the specifications for slope tie-ins for
both up and down slope conditions. Choose the Offset
tool to select either edge of the road.

The next illustration shows a
portion of the road zoomed up with the tie-in to
existing created by daylight offsetting both the
left and right shoulders of the road.

Stripping and Subgrade adjustments
can be added easily to make a tedious manual
take-off into a quick and easy exercise.
